JOB SUMMARY
The research assistant will be part of the Zoonoses group. He/she will work on a project to identify and investigate the genetic relatedness of Escherichia coli isolated from animals and humans in Vietnam. This project is in collaboration with Wellcome Sanger Institution and is aimed to address the current public issues relevant to both animal and human health. In brief, the genomic data, along with the associated epidemiological metadata, provides an opportunity to address key questions in this field, such as the relative importance of zoonotic and horizontal gene transfer, the impact of antimicrobial use on AMR, and the dynamics of Escherichia coli.
KEY TASKS & RESPONSIBILITIES
The successful post holder will:
•Analyse microbial whole-genome sequence data using various bioinformatics approaches to address the project aims
•Take part in analyzing large epidemiological datasets.
•Work with other team member(s) in interpretation of the data and/ or design follow up experiments.
•Participate in the preparation of manuscripts

This post is based in Oxford University Clinical Research Unit, Ho Chi Minh City.
HOURS OF WORKS
Full time Monday – Friday, 37.5 hours per week, extra hours may be required.
TENURE
Initially for one year, includes of 2 months’ probation, with the possibility for extension later.

SELECTION CRITERIA
QUALIFICIATION
– BSc/MSc in relevant subjects (e.g. Computational Biology, Microbiology, Molecular Genetics, Bioinformatics, Epidemiology, Computer Science, Computer Engineering or Information System…)
– Having basic programming/scripting skills in R, Matlab, Python/Jupyter, Perl, Unix or other programming languages.
–Although additional specific training will be provided, post holder should have experiences in analysing whole genome sequencing data.
PERSON SPECIFICATIONS
–Understanding of how to process and manage large datasets.
–Understanding of epidemiology and transmission of infectious diseases
–Analytical problem-solving skills, willingness to learn, self-initiative, attention to detail.
–Ability to work to tight deadlines
–Team player, organized, patient, dedicated, tactful, understanding, disciplined and mature.
–Having excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
–Keen on self-development
–IELTS 6.0 - 6.5 equivalent
DESIRABLE CRITERIA
–Training in machine learning and NGS genomic analysis is a plus.
–Understanding of bacterial genomics.
–Strong motivation to apply quantitative analysis and modelling methods in medical research.
–Experienced in scientific writing
