The Beyond Academic Department was established with the mission to provide students with practical, dynamic, and meaningful learning experiences through fieldtrips, weekend camps, and summer camps. We are looking for enthusiastic, creative Camp Counselors who love children to join us in creating groundbreaking programs.
POSITION PURPOSE:
Counselors are the primary caregivers for each camper. The Counselor is responsible for teaching, coordinating, and carrying out activities and guiding campers in their personal growth and daily living skills.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Assist in the direction, supervision, and organization of campers in their camper group within activities and throughout the camp in order to meet the intended camper outcomes.
Be aware of and implement safety guidelines, ensuring campers’ absolute physical and emotional safety throughout their time at the camp.
Assure campers are properly supervised at all times; assist campers with daily activities (eating, resting, personal hygiene if needed).
Identify, intervene in, and resolve conflicts or behavioral issues among campers in a positive and constructive manner.
Apply basic youth development principles in working with campers through communication, relationship development, respect for diversity, involvement and empowerment of youth.
Enforce camp rules and regulations fairly and consistently.
Participate in the development and implementation of program activities for campers within the mission and outcomes.
Assist in program areas and preparation such as waterfront, nature, all camp activities, and arts and crafts as directed.
Actively participate in all program areas as assigned.
Attend training provided online or offline.
Responsible for leading or assisting with the teaching of activities.
Provide for a progression of activities within the framework of individual and group interests and abilities, encouraging enthusiastic participation, teamwork, and the inclusion of all members.
Maintain high standards of health and safety in all activities for campers and staff.
Be alert to campers and staff needs and assist them with personal and/or health problems; discuss with camp health manager and/or camp director when appropriate.
Provide the daily care of each camper within your supervision including recognition of personal health needs.
Be alert to equipment and facilities to ensure utilization, proper care, and maintenance is adhered to; report repairs needed promptly to the camp manager.
Ensure that campers receive their medications as directed by the Medical Specialist or Health Care Manager.
Be a role model to campers and staff in your attitude and behavior.
Be a positive role model in attitude, speech, and behavior.
Follow and uphold all safety and security rules and procedures.
Set a good example to campers and others in regard to general camp procedures and practices including sanitation, schedule, and sportsmanship.
Create a fun, safe, respectful, and inclusive camp atmosphere.
Build a trusting and friendly relationship with campers.
Represent the camp when interacting with parents or community members.
Provide parents appropriate feedback and information as needed for their campers to have a successful camp experience.
Follow safety and security protocols when campers are in public while presenting a positive image of the camp.
OTHER JOB DUTIES:
Contribute to verbal and written evaluations and communication as requested.
Identify other tasks or duties that this position may be expected to perform but are not necessarily the primary focus of this position.
Provide supervision for campers while campers are transported to and from camp or during scheduled field trips off of camp property.
Actively participate in team meetings for updates and planning.
RELATIONSHIPS:
Counselors generally have regular relationships with Program Specialists (Medical Specialist, Outdoor Specialist, etc), Logistics Staff, Business and Maintenance staff. It is helpful to identify the expectations of those relationships and communication between these groups of staff members. Counselors should coordinate closely with other staff and Camp Manager to ensure the program runs smoothly.
EQUIPMENT USED:
May include but not limited to: classroom supplies, sports equipment, art materials, digital devices, first aid kits, and camp- specific tools managed under TOTAL EDUCATION&039;s inventory protocol.
QUALIFICATIONS: (Minimum Education and Experience)
Ability to interact with all age levels.
Current 3rd- year, 4th- year students, or graduates from universities in Hanoi. Preference for majors in Education, Psychology, Event Management, Tourism, Marketing, Sociology, or related fields.
Good physical health to participate in physical activities and work outdoors.
Must be 18 years of age or older.
Passion for and experience working with children/teenagers (e.g., previous experience as a volunteer, teaching assistant, group leader, or camp participant). Preference will be given to candidates with experience as counselors or coordinators for field trips, camps, or events.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Proficiency in English, especially for communication and coordination.
Understanding of the development needs of children and youth.
Willing to travel, and available to work on weekends when programs are scheduled.
Preference for talents in arts, music, sports, or outdoor/camping skills.
Ability to relate to children, youth and adults in a positive manner.
Clear communication; flexible problem- solving; effective teamwork, group management, and activity organization skills..
High sense of responsibility; proactive and patient; energetic and enthusiastic.
Physical Aspects of the Job:
Ability to observe camper behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior- management techniques.
Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid. Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers.
Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity.
Ability to communicate and work with groups participating (age and skill levels) and provide necessary instruction to campers and staff.
Some physical requirements of a general counselor position could be endurance including prolonged standing, some bending, stooping, walking long distances, hiking, climbing, and stretching; requires eye- hand coordination and manual dexterity to manipulate outdoor equipment and camp activities; requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare, and communicate appropriate camper activities/programs and the ability to lift up to 50 lbs; willing to live in a camp setting and work irregular hours with limited or simple equipment and facilities; and with daily exposure to the sun, heat, and animals such as bugs, etc.
