EAL Teacher

Student Attainment and achievement
• To liaise with other relevant departments regarding EAL provision and support for students
• To give students a metacognitive understanding of why the language skills being taught are necessary to achieve success in the mainstream curriculum
• To promote high standards of work and attitude to learning amongst students
• To liaise with relevant staff regarding any students of concern
• To maintain a positive climate in the classroom including effective behaviour for learning strategies.
• To develop language-related resources for other departments that will support EAL, as well as other, students in improving their academic writing skills
• To demonstrate good safeguarding practices and to know the reporting procedures to follow in case of a Child Protection issue
Teaching
• Share good practice with other colleagues
• Teach according to the needs of the students in the class, differentiating for varying abilities
• Be ambitious and reflective across all aspects of teaching
• Ensure effective communication with all staff
• Plan interesting, engaging and learning-focused lessons
• Provide support to other departments to develop their students’ academic writing skills
• Have an ability to integrate technology to enhance learning
• Provide pastoral care to students as required.
Assessment
• Play an active role in student review meetings: use soft and hard data to analyse student progress and identify students who would benefit from additional academic and/or pastoral support.
• Play an active role in the Secondary admissions process: interview students and provide feedback to the Head of Campus on students’ suitability to join BIS.
• Provide students with regular, detailed feedback that allows them to know how they are performing against the AREs and what they need to do to improve, and to inform decision making about transition out of EAL support
• Provide assessment data as required by the Head of Department and Senior Leadership Team
Administration/Development:
• Supervise students on a duty rota
• Play a full part in internal and external CPD opportunities, including staff meetings
• Any other reasonable task assigned by the Principal or Head Teacher
• Be responsible for personal health and safety, and know how to report H&S concerns
• Contact parents on academic or social matters, including follow up on reports, parents’ meetings etc.
• Liaise with Head of Department to contribute to an annual Action Plan
• Offer exciting co-curricular opportunities that meet the needs of the student cohort
• Take into account the identified whole school and campus developments for the year and work as part of the team to implement any necessary changes and developments identified.
• Be involved in the organisation and delivery of events, House events, assemblies, and special focus events

Qualifications/Training
- CELTA/TEFL or other English Language teaching qualification
- Degree plus teaching qualification
- A minimum of three years recent experience of EAL classroom teaching
Experience / Knowledge
- Knowledge of EAL in the mainstream classroom
- International Experience
- Understanding of effective teaching and learning theory and practice of providing effectively for the individual needs of all children through classroom organisation, differentiation and learning strategies
- Outstanding classroom practice
- Good working knowledge of the English National Curriculum
- Experience of teaching/Knowledge of the IPC (International Primary Curriculum)
