Modern retainers are no longer just “marketing retainers.” High- performing Account Directors are expected to connect communication, media, performance, and eCommerce revenue into one coherent growth story. This position leads and grows a portfolio of retainer clients, overseeing the full scope of account management from strategic planning and commercial ownership to team leadership and cross- functional coordination. This role ensures strong client partnerships, clear strategic direction, and consistent delivery quality across integrated marketing, media, performance, and eCommerce- related scopes. You will work closely with Account, Planning, Creative, Media, Performance, and Finance teams to ensure all initiatives are strategically sound, commercially viable, and delivered on time, within scope, and within budget.
Client & Retainer Portfolio Leadership
Drive retainer stability through proactive risk management and expectation setting
Lead and grow a defined portfolio of retainer clients with full ownership of account health
Handle senior- level client escalations and complex stakeholder management
Act as senior strategic partner, leading business and growth discussions beyond execution
Own revenue, margin, renewal, and client satisfaction at the account level
Identify upsell, cross- sell, and scope expansion opportunities across marketing, media, performance, and eCommerce
Strategic Planning & Thinking
Ensure strategic consistency across always- on and campaign- based initiatives
Lead integrated marketing (IMC), media, and performance planning for assigned accounts
Review and challenge briefs, strategic frameworks, and proposed solutions before execution
Translate client business goals into actionable marketing and performance roadmaps
Approve annual, quarterly, and campaign- level plans and proposals
Ensure strategies are aligned with clear business objectives, growth priorities, and KPIs
Team Leadership & Traffic Management
Identify workload risks early and adjust resourcing or scope accordingly
Establish operating rhythm (weekly reviews, delivery check- ins, performance updates)
Set clear roles, ownership, and performance expectations within the account team
Manage, coach, and develop Account Managers and Account Executives
Balance retainer workload and campaign demands to ensure delivery quality and sustainability
Coordinate traffic and resource allocation across Planning, Creative, Media, Performance, and eCommerce teams
Media, Performance & eCommerce Understanding
Support strategic decisions related to performance scaling and eCommerce growth
Evaluate channel mix, budget allocation, and KPI performance against business objectives
Understand how media and performance drive eCommerce outcomes (traffic quality, conversion rate, revenue, ROAS)
Translate performance and eCommerce data into clear, business- relevant insights for clients
Review media and performance plans, reports, and optimization recommendations
Maintain strong working knowledge of media planning, media buying logic, and performance marketing
Commercial Ownership & Governance
Own P&L and margin performance for assigned accounts
Control scope, pricing, and commercial terms to prevent margin leakage
Manage change requests, out- of- scope discussions, and contract adjustments
Ensure accurate forecasting, budgeting, and revenue tracking
Identify commercial and delivery risks early and drive corrective actions
Act as a gatekeeper to protect both strategic quality and agency profitability
Growth Profile
Connect marketing, media, performance, and eCommerce into one coherent growth narrative
Evolve from managing individual accounts to managing revenue ecosystems and senior teams
Build from strong account management and client leadership fundamentals
Gradually expand account conversations into eCommerce- led growth and revenue impact
Demonstrate ability to manage multiple accounts as a portfolio, not in isolation
